CHIEF INSTRUCTOR'S MESSAGE

Welcome to Monticle.

If you are going to an unknown area, do you prefer using a GPS or a map and compass? Today, most youth will say the GPS is better and question why they should learn to use a map and compass. GPS' are fast, high tech and easy to operate while practicing map and compass methods are old, take time to figure out, and require some thinking. As a parent, which option do you encourage your child to choose? After almost 40 years, I am still grateful that my scout leader taught me how to use the map and compass. On that day, I discovered that the simplest way is not always the best way to go about things.

Although using a GPS is easy and it is technologically advanced, we tend to rely on it and blindly go where it takes us. It saves time and involves only minimal thinking and decision making. When the device runs out of batteries, it becomes useless. A map on the other hand, makes you do the work but gives you sufficient information to do so. Combined with the compass, I have learned how to analyze my options, plan my route, and use my tools effectively. More importantly, I learned a very important life lesson: that the easiest way is not always the best way. Even though I spent a lot of time to learn about how to use a map and compass, I am now confident and can rely on myself, rather than technology.

As a parent, we care for our children and wish them success in life. Everyday, we push our children to study and get the best grades. But is it not equally important for them to learn how to use what they know in real life? Practical knowledge requires practice and application. At Monticle, we believe in the map and compass method. We encourage individuals to learn essential skills, make sound decisions, and to think outside the box. Developing a strong foundation of skills and knowledge and knowing how to apply them is what sets your child apart from others. I invite you to start your child's journey of self-discovery today.
